Zone Tick vs Life360: which family safety app is right for you?

About 6 minutes to read · Life360's plans checked on 5 October 2026

Life360 is the best-known family locator, and it is very good at what it was built for: seeing where everyone is, with driving services on top. Zone Tick was built for a different moment — the one where something goes wrong and the phone is in a pocket, a bag or out of reach. Both share live location. Where they differ is in what happens next.

Here is the short version, then the detail, including where Life360 may suit you better.

1. When the phone is out of reach

Most safety apps assume you can unlock your phone and press a button. In a fall, a crash, a threatening situation or a medical episode, that is exactly what you can't do. Zone Tick has several ways to raise the alarm without touching the screen:

2. Location history that tells you what happened

Life360 keeps more days of history on its higher plans: 30 on Gold and Platinum, against our 7 on Premium. What we have put our effort into is what a day shows:

On the free plan, Zone Tick shows today's route on your phone only, as a preview; it never reaches our servers. Life360's free plan keeps 2 days.

3. Sharing on your terms

Both apps share live location with the people in your circle. Zone Tick lets you choose, circle by circle, whether that is everyone, selected people or nobody. In the next update you can also share only at set times — say 8 pm to 4 am on the nights you work alone — with sharing stopping when your time ends or when you get home. It saves battery, and your family sees you when it matters rather than all day.

4. Your neighbourhood, not just your family

Zone Tick's Community (adults only) puts you in a local group for your area, with safety reports sorted nearest first, so you hear about a break-in or a road hazard down the street. Every photo on a report is checked before anyone sees it. Nobody in Community sees your account, phone number or where you are — only the name you chose there.

5. Privacy and ads

A family safety app knows where everyone you love is. Zone Tick never sells personal information, shows only non-personalised ads on the free plan, and shows none on Premium. Our privacy policy lists every type of data we collect and why. Whichever app you choose, read its privacy policy before you share your family's location with it.

When Life360 may suit you better

We would rather you choose well than choose us. Life360 is likely the better fit if you want:

Many families use both: one for the car, one for the moments when a phone is out of reach. If you have a new driver at home, our guide to the first year of driving is worth reading either way.

Choosing any family safety app: five questions

  1. Can someone raise the alarm without unlocking the phone? In a real emergency that is often the only option.
  2. Does it keep working with the app closed? Check on both iPhone and Android, and read the app's own guide to battery settings.
  3. What is free, really? Look at the plan table, not the headline: how many people an SOS reaches, and how long history lasts.
  4. Who can see what? You should be able to choose who sees your location and your history, and change your mind.
  5. What happens to the data? Read whether it is sold or used for advertising.
